Make a Choice!
For years we used the daily graph questions in our kindergarten classes... like
everyone else.  Our students would generally answer "yes" or "no" to a morning
question, we would determine the results, and never really do much else with it until we
added a new question the next morning.  So we started making the questions a bit
more complex. Then we noticed the students actually reading most of the questions
independently (because of a heavy reliance on high frequency words).  What an
opportunity to extend their literacy skills... and we had missed it for years!  That's how
we came up with the ideas for this series.  We have used these in our classes now for
almost two years with great results.  Now we are excited to share these ideas with you.
Expect success!

There are three books in this series: Daily Graph Questions, Surveys Says!, and Who's
Who (Interviews).  Each volume is full of questions that require students to... Make a
Choice!
Daily Graph Questions That Allow Students to Make a Choice!
(Volume 1)
contains over 180 prompts.  There are lots of ways for students
to "vote" on their responses to the questions.  One way is to create a grid on
the side of a filing cabinet (or metal surface), place the question at the top, and
let the student vote.  Our students made voting sticks by decorating wide craft
sticks and adding magnetic tape to the back.  Another method is to attach the
question to a simple pan balance and let students vote by placing marbles (or
other similar objects) in the appropriate pan.  You could also attach the
question to two jars.  Students could "vote" by placing a straw (or craft stick) in
the correct jar.  Of course, there are many other ways to graph their responses.
Choose the one that suits your class best.

This daily activity acquaints your students with responding to print,
interpreting graphs, and making a choice!   You will notice that the prompts are
set in many different fonts.  Some of these will be familiar to your students,
some will not.  We believe that students should be exposed to as many
different styles of print as possible.  This ensures true letter memory, flexibility,
and fluency.
Survey Says! Polls That Allow Students to Make a Choice!
(Volume 2)
extends the daily questions, by allowing students to poll fellow
classmates on related topics.  Over 100 surveys are included in this volume.
Students basically walk around with a survey attached to a clipboard polling
other students.  Each person polled signs his or her name in the right column
or the poller may use tally marks.  We already knew students love to use
clipboards to write around the room, but when we handed them this task to
go along with the clipboard... they were beside themselves!

Once a student has polled the class, he or she can then interpret the results
by totaling the number of students in each column.  This activity is wonderful
for reading, responding to print, questioning techniques, recording and
interpreting information, and making a choice!
Who's Who? Interviews That Allow Students to Make a
Choice! (Volume 3)
extends the survey process by teaching students
to interview.  The focus isn't to find out as much as possible about one
person, but to search a group of people for certain characteristics, e.g.
"Who likes bugs?"  This volume contains over 100 interviews, enabling
students to find out a little bit more about their peers.

This activity scaffolds the reading process by expecting students to read,
predict, question, evaluate, and repeat the process again... all the while,
making a choice!

This book is designed to be a resource for teachers of young readers and
writers.  Our sincere hope is that these activities will be as fun and
successful for your students as they have been for ours.  We look forward
to hearing the results of using these books in YOUR class.
