Buzz Book
How to Share
the Pen
This book contains over 400 "message skeletons" ready to
be copied  onto chart paper or Xeroxed onto transparencies.
These shared writing "starters" introduce and/or reinforce
concepts of:
Oral Language, Print Awareness, Phonological Awareness,
Letter/Sound Relationship, Vocabulary Development,
Comprehension, Text Structure, Research Tools/Inquiry,
Punctuation, Writing Purposes, Writing Process,
Foundations of Writing, Spelling, and Grammar.

The Buzz Book is basically a "morning message" in which
the students must respond in some way.  But it is SO much
more than your basic "morning message" or mundane
"class news."  This method of shared writing not only
teaches letter formation, sound recognition, encoding and
decoding, but also vocabulary, language fluency (both oral
and written), how to brainstorm and organize thoughts,
self-monitoring, flexibility of thought, reasoning, and editing.

Step 1: Begin with a "message skeleton."  (Something in
the message should be missing or incorrect.)

Step 2: "Buzz." (Students tell each other their ideas before
sharing with the group.)

Step 3: Share! (A few students share with the group.  This
should only last about 3-5 minutes, so not every student will
have time to share with the group.)

Step 4: Write!  (The teacher and the students share the
marker to write group ideas.)

Step 5: Reread and discuss!  (Use this time to correct any
mistakes, teach mini-lessons, and develop vocabulary.)
