For the next 2 weeks my class will be talking about insects. My favorite activity to do during this unit is watching caterpillars as they form a chrysalis and then become butterflies. Usually, by this time of year, the milkweed that my dad planted for me has several caterpillars on it. However, this year I have not seen one. This afternoon I will be going to the nursery to see if any of the plants there have them. We will be going to the zoo this Wednesday and I know there are lots of milkweed plants there. I am going to take a container with me. If there are caterpillars on the plants there, I am bring some back with me. If you have a favorite insect activity, please share them with us.
Bugs, Bugs, Bugs
April 19th, 2010PreK Behavior
April 8th, 2010I have been off campus for the first three days of this week. I left plenty of work for the substitute along with lots of instructions on handling my class. The lady who took my class is really strong in discipline so I didn’t really worry. Well…….. the first day, 6 of my students got in trouble in the cafeteria. Their response to the monitor was “Mrs. Jackson is not here so we won’t get in trouble.” The second day, one on my students bit another student on the playground! The third day, only 7 got to plant their beans because the rest did not complete their work or were just not listening.
Today…we have received 3 hallway “thumbs up” awards! My point to all of this is to find out if anyone has any really good ideas of how to get 4 and 5 year olds to understand that when the cat is away the mice shouldn’t be playing!
I will be out the first three days of next week also. So, if you have suggestions please send them right away!
Have a great day teaching! And remember that summer is just around the corner.
PreK Math
April 6th, 2010I hope everyone has not completely given up on me! I apologize for not blogging since before Houston rodeo time. I wanted to let everyone know that I am attending a “Train the Trainer” PreK Math Workshop presented by Dr. Nita Copley. It is absolutely wonderful! I am learning to teach prek math and can’t wait to get started. I will be sharing some the the activities after I complete the training. If any of you have some fun math activities to share, please do!
Home Centers In PreK
February 3rd, 2010Yesterday, after much deliberation, I made the decision to take the home center out of my prek class. I moved the furniture out in the hallway after school and immediately got a million questions from other teachers. When I told them what I was doing, I could tell that most didn’t agree with my decision. Personally, I just think my students are needing to spend time in the other centers available in my class. And, you know, the home center takes up a lot of space. I am interested to know what the rest of you think, Have a great day!
Technology Conference
February 2nd, 2010Next week I will be attending TCEA in Austin. If you have never been, this is a conference that is well worth the money. There are workshops that are presented by representatives from various companies such as Adobe and Microsoft, but the best workshops are presented by teachers who are using technology in their classrooms. The exhibits are wonderful and you come away with all sorts of freebies. If any of you are attending let me know. After the conference we can share some of the things we learned. Have a great day!
