Wow! First we graphed the apples by
color using Ellison die-cut apples. Then
we create real graph using their apples.
We graph them by color (notice the 2
apples between the red and yellow
headings.... the kids always insist on
being accurate!),
weight, stem/no stem, size, smell, etc.
They'll think of a million more attributes
to graph, too.
We also stamp apple prints in response to Theo LeSieg's
Ten Apples Up on Top . After the prints are dry, the
students label the apples 1-10.
After successfully completing an ABC pattern with
manipulatives, the students gather their materials to
create an ABC pattern hat.
On the last day of the unit, we always cut the apples into
quarters and make caramel apples. Each apple quarter
needs 2 melted caramel candies, so we "do the math,"
melt the caramel, dip, and eat!
